Check Engine Light On? Here's What It Could Mean

By BOBS Auto Services Β Β·Β  April 12, 2025

Few things are more anxiety-inducing than seeing that orange check engine light glow on your dashboard. The good news: it doesn't always mean a catastrophic problem. The bad news: it should never be ignored.

What the Check Engine Light Means Your vehicle's OBD-II system continuously monitors dozens of sensors throughout the engine, transmission, and emissions systems. When a reading falls outside acceptable parameters, a fault code is stored and the check engine light illuminates.

Common Causes - Loose or faulty gas cap: One of the most common causes β€” easy to check and fix yourself. - Faulty oxygen sensor: O2 sensors monitor exhaust emissions. A bad one hurts fuel economy and emissions. - Catalytic converter failure: Usually triggered by ignoring other issues like a bad O2 sensor or misfires. - Spark plugs or ignition coils: Misfires cause the check engine light and can damage your catalytic converter over time. - Mass airflow sensor (MAF): Controls the fuel-to-air mixture. A dirty or failing MAF hurts performance and fuel economy. - EVAP system leaks: Vapors escaping from the fuel system trigger emissions codes.

Steady Light vs. Flashing Light A steady check engine light means there's an issue that needs diagnosis, but you can generally drive to a shop. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire is occurring that could damage your catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call us.

What NOT to Do Don't just clear the codes without fixing the underlying problem. The light will come back β€” and you'll have wasted money. Bring your vehicle to BOBS Auto Services for a proper diagnostic scan and honest repair recommendation.
